Party vows to stop protests

ANCYL called off Khoza home

- SIYABONGA MKHWANAZI

THE ANC Youth League in eThekwini, KwaZulu-Natal, says it will call off planned protests outside ANC MP Makhosi Khoza’s house in Hillcrest, Durban, after her remarks against President Jacob Zuma.

But they still want her recalled from Parliament.

Khoza, in turn, has asked for security measures to be installed at her home after her address was posted on Facebook.

Youth League regional secretary in eThekwini Thinta Cibane said the league would no longer protest at her house, but also called on the ANC to recall her from Parliament for insulting the party.

“We are going to lobby the ANC to recall her from Parliament. If the ANC is an amoral organisation why is she still in Parliament?” he said.

Cibane said it was unheard of that a person who insulted the party would still keep her position.

He denied that their planned protests had posed a threat to Khoza’s children. He said the ANCYL was against gender- based violence and would not come near her children.

Khoza said she was concerned about the safety of her children, and that the damage was already done after the ANCYL had circulated her address on social media.

She said she had received attacks on social media and via her phone.

“The sad thing is that I couldn’t go home. It’s not good for our democracy to be in exile. It’s scary for my children. I am worried about my children,” Khoza said.

She said her daughter went to report the threats at the Hillcrest police station and the police came to check on her house.

She was afraid for her children and would want the ANC and Parliament to help where possible.

She said ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu was going to meet with Speaker Baleka Mbete on how best to address the issue. She hoped the matter would be resolved soon.

It is not the first time Khoza has been threatened.

Threatened

In March she was threatened by a provincial Department of Health official in Mpumalanga after her committee visited a hospital where they discovered many problems.

Khoza is the chairperson of the portfolio committee on public service and administration.

She has spoken out against Zuma and said she would not vote for an amoral leader.

The ANCYL in eThekwini said it wanted her to leave Parliament if she felt that way about the ANC and its leader.

Parliament said it had not received a request for security assistance from Khoza. It would deal with the matter after it landed on Mbete’s desk.

Mthembu could not be reached for comment.
