RIYA Ramlall took home gold in the World Ocean’s Day Smart Art Competition that encouraged children to create art using recyclable items.

Riya, 8, a Chelsea Preparatory pupil, was awarded R1 500 for herself and R5 000 for her school with a winning art piece that resembled a peacock, made from a plastic bottle, toilet-roll holder and hand-wash container pump and wooden skewers.

Kiara Rhamdani, 9, was second and won R800, while Andile Shangase came third, taking home a prize of R500.

Both girls represent St Michaels Primary, which was placed second as a school, thus winning R2 500.
