Villages attacked

BEIRUT: Two Shia Muslim villages in northwest Syria came under attack from rebel forces who have besieged them for years, prompting retaliator­y air strikes.

The villages of al-Foua and Kefraya were attacked by rebel forces overnight.

Fighting in the villages began on Friday, after air strikes carried out by progovernm­ent war planes on the northeast village of Zardana killed at least 51 people.
