‘We demand’ all we hear from rioting student thugs

- corruption. | Tony Bennett, Durban.

POLITICS

African governments are like children spending money in a sweet shop, except the money is for food for the people. | Robert

As about 9 in 10 of all those killed on our roads are black and government action could stop most road deaths, it seems that black lives don’t matter to the ANC government or to the opposition parties which fail to hold them to account. | Richard Benson, Road Safety Action Campaign, Cape Town.

No surprise that half the youth up to the age of 25 are unemployed. With strict labour laws and lack of government finance for training there’s no incentive for SMBs to employ. Time for the Minister of Labour to act positively. | Edmac

ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY

Please could Mayor Gumede take a road trip up to St Lucia and Cape Vidal. Pristine road verges, no litter and the curio centres are clean with no flapping plastic blinds. As soon as you hit uMhlanga what a mess. Shame on you Durban. | Lynn, Glenashley.

Streetlights on the Higginson Highway: can an urgent appeal be made to the higher powers in the eThekwini Municipality to please get the lights along the highway fixed? There’s been no lights at strategic parts of the highway for more than a year now. As taxpaying citizens of Chatsworth, we need to benefit as well. It’s eerie driving along the highway at night... the councillors here are aware of the problem but it falls on deaf ears.

As a resident of Montford Chatsworth, for numerous years I think our roads deserve better names than just being called by numbers like Road 701. Please... all the other areas in Chatsworth have proper names, why can’t we in Montford have road names too?

STUDENT PROTESTS

EFF students at DUT go on the rampage, destroying property, burning vehicles as their demands for everything for free are not met. Then go on camera interviews with eNCA, feigning they are the poor, innocent victims. Where are their student leaders with the foresight to stand up and tell the misguided youths, that they cannot get everything for free and to concentrate on their studies to become valuable citizens who add value to the economy and country. It is easier to believe you are entitled to everything for free and destroy other people’s property. Entitlement is the new word for

These students behaving like a bunch of idiots destroying property burning vehicles etc. Do you really think I would employ you? We demand is all we hear. You are the ones who vote for the ANC crooks. Maybe you need to think about it when you vote in May.

Condolences to the family of the student who lost his life while protesting at the university. The EFF must be held accountable for his death. It’s about time they realised that if you involve yourself in violent protests you may get injured or killed. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that, so even the EFF leaders should understand that. There are means of getting things done. Try reasonable negotiations, it will get you a lot further and your members may not get killed. | Graham Rice. And so the narrative goes on… The security guards intimidated the students and they reacted with stone throwing around the SRC offices and this resulted in the death of a student. Tragic. However, any damage to varsity property and destruction of private individuals’ property is always the work of rogue elements. How convenient. Naledi Pandor talks nonsense to cover for the government’s inability to deal with student issues. Notwithstanding this, the students, as a collective behave like thugs.

I always feel sorry for security guards that they are poorly paid but after reading about the death of the DUT student I have changed my attitude towards them. Most of them are illiterate but they think they know everything. They are guards at the universities but they do not study. Even those who work at Unisa do not bother to improve themselves, instead they hate students. They have lost my respect.
