Hours before the State of the Nation Address, Finance Minister Tito Mboweni announced that he was in the process of appointing a new Sars commissioner. The post has been vacant since Tom Moyane was dismissed in November. Mboweni has appointed a seven-member panel to shortlist candidates. Mboweni was slated on Twitter for also not considering the weakening rand.
@Mninikaya_S: I assume there will always be reservations with most of the processes government embarks on because of the trust deficit. The consolation however is the transparency involved unlike when the president appoints people from obscurity for reasons that are not in public interest!
@HlubiHendricks: President Cyril #Ramaphosa is using some of the money that comes from foreign investors on appointing panels. Why can’t Tito Mboweni ask Parliament or allow the treasury to oversee the process?
@WIM94857241: President Ramaphosa was instructed to appoint the Sars commissioner in his capacity as president of the country. Tito Mboweni is probably tasked to present two or three names to the president who then has to name the new commissioner.
@hostilenativ: This is a complete violation of the law. The decision on who to appoint as Sars Commissioner rests squarely on the president. Not Tito Mboweni, who then outsources the function to the chairman of Old Mutual (a financial institution).
@peace_inourland: The problem is with the voters who keep on voting for incompetence – look how Ramaphosa lied again last year about providing jobs.
@BruceCGordon: Someone from that committee might need to rescue themselves in that instance.
@jonathanktm300: The appointments take political will and a lot of courage, especially going into an election. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen those qualities in SA.
@Mmaps_ThePro: What a joke. The same rand doesn’t even help to create jobs for the youth. We have one of the highest unemployment rates in the world.
@mheidtman:Look at @Eskom_SA! Billions looted, monies not collected, Kusile and others totally over budget with shoddy workmanship! Nobody held accountable!
@ThangoNgxola:I thought they’d give it to the acting fellow, he’s doing a good job.
