- BENIDA PHILLIPS STAFF REPORTER

THE PARTNERSHIP in road safety between the departments of Transport and Basic Education will be emphasised when the Minister of Transport, Dipuo Peters, hands over a Torch of Peace to the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, in Kimberley on Friday.

The event, which will take place at Tetlanyo High School, is in support of education’s Safer Schools campaign which is aimed at promoting safety in schools.

Spokeswoman for the Northern Cape Department of Transport, Keitumetse Moticoe, said Peters will use the day to address scholar transport issues.

“The ministers will be joined by the MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Martha Bartlett, who is also the Acting MEC for the Department of Education, and 400 hundred learners from various schools in Galeshewe.

“There will also be exhibitions focusing on Road Safety Education and opportunities in the transport sector for learners,” she said.

“The Torch of Peace was handed over to the Transport Department for the Festive Season Road Safety campaign in December 2015 by the Department of Women.

“The torch is a symbolic gesture of goodwill and light that uplifts the department’s efforts in making our roads safe during the busiest season. For the Department of Women the Torch of Peace has become a symbol of our country’s national campaign to combat violence against women and children for the 16 Days Campaign for No Violence Against Women and Children.”
