City cops off duty
“This is a violation of the rights of suspects.” According to Popcur and Sapu, the unions have made several attempts to intervene at station level as well as with the Provincial Commissioner.
Popcru’s provincial secretary, Boitumelo Pheleo, said that the management style of the station was demoralising members.
“Drastic changes are needed to improve the situation. General complaints are not attended to and SAPS members are subjected to ill treatment. This, in turn, is affecting services. Decisions are also being taken without consultation with unions or the involvement of staff members. ”
He added that overtime was not being paid while police officers were expected to work long hours.
“Basic conditions of employment, in terms of the collective agreement, are not being adhered to.
Pheleo added that members at the Kimberley Police Station were also experiencing similar problems.
“Kimberley is one of the worst performing stations and members are being transferred for no reason. The situation cannot continue.”
Sapu’s provincial secretary, Johan Valentine, pointed out that the Roodepan Police Station had regressed from being the third best performing station in the Province, to number 97.
“Personnel and supervisors are ridiculed in front of their peers and subordinates. Officials are been charged with poor performance without any assistance provided in order for staff to improve their set targets.”
He stated that no steps had been taken to improve the intolerable working conditions where the working relationship has broken down irreparably between management and staff.
“Approved leave dates of members are changed without notice.”
Valentine added that several meetings have been scheduled with the Provincial Commissioner.
Spokesperson for the SAPS, Colonel Mohale Ramatseba, said that due to the nature and sensitivity of the enquiry, they were not able to respond.
“The matter is receiving attention and a comprehensive response will be provided by the office of the Provincial Commissioner, at their earliest convenience.”
