Curtain falls on festival
THE CURTAIN came down, yesterday, on the ninth Wildeklawer Schools Festival, which delivered some exciting and some close encounters between the 20 rugby teams as well as the 12 netball teams.
On day one, Saturday, there were some mismatches, especially on the rugby field where newcomers Helpmekaar overcame hosts Diamantveld 36-15, while in earlier fixture between Welkom Gymnasium were far too strong for HTS Middelburg, beating them 48-10.
Another mismatch was between Grey College and Boland Landbou where Grey ran away with the game 49-8.
Northern Cape were just unlucky to lose their match against Outeniqua (28-21), but Outeniqua’s form did not carry over as they couldn’t post any points against Affies in yesterday’s match and were hammered 34-0.
Another game that kept the crowd on their feet was between Waterkloof and Paarl Gymnasium where Paarl walked away with the honours (26-7). Waterkloof came back yesterday to beat Paul Roos 38-25.
All the participating schools had some outstanding players as the boys played their hearts out and never gave up, irrespective of whether they won or lost – in the end the game of rugby was the winner.
New long lasting friendships were made as old ones rekindled from last year, both on the rugby field and also on the netball courts.
Louis de Kock quipped over the weekend that next year will be the 10th year of this festival and it promises to be bigger and better than this year’s most successful one.
