Residents slam Sol’s quick fix
employees would be willing to live in such conditions,” said Kock.
Residents added that they were losing patience with the municipality.
“We do not want to go to the streets and burn tyres. That is why we have been talking and reporting these problems to them. People are becoming fed up with these temporary solutions. We wish the municipality would just do its job properly,” they said.
Residents in Homelight shared the same frustrations over the blocked sewage pipes.
A resident in Bream Street, Joan Visser, said the problem had been ongoing for more than a decade.
“My husband passed away nine years ago. He fought with the municipality to get our blocked sewage pipes fixed years before he passed on. This problem has been carrying on since this area came into inception. We still have not found a solution. We have reported it several times and wrote many letters to the council but nothing has been done over the years,” Visser said.
She added that, just like all the other community members who have been affected by the sewage problem, life had become miserable.
“One cannot enjoy life when you are living in stench and filth. My yard is always flooded and I have to throw sand on the sewage in an attempt to stop it from running into the street. This also poses a risk to our health,” said Visser.
A resident in Garrick Street, Fatiema Abraham, said that they had to deal with the unhygienic mess themselves.
“There are two manholes in my yard. The blocked pipes result in both manholes overflowing. There is not just human waste and toilet paper we have to clear up but there are used condoms and sanitary towels that flow into my yard. I have a two-year-old child and it is a serious health risk to him. The municipality has left us to deal with the problem on our own,” said Abrahams.
Municipal spokesman, Sello Matsie, said that the actions of the workers were unacceptable.
“This is an inconvenience to the residents. It was not supposed to end like that. We apologise for the inconvenience caused and will go back to fix it. We will also address the problem with those responsible,” said Matsie.
