Rantoa flexes his muscle in dramatic Shield showdown

- DAVE WILSON GOLF CORRESPONDENT

THE FIRST-round deadline in the Club Matchplay Championships for the Bob Klemp Shield prompted several matches through the week.

Although successful results were recorded by Stiaan Hugo, Hermus

Venter and Nico Jacobs nothing was as dramatic as the match between the second seed Deon Kruis and the

15th seed Flexx Rantoa on Saturday afternoon. In theory outgunned before the start, however an outstanding gross 35 through the opening nine placed Flexx Rantoa two up at the halfway mark. His great form held through the second nine where he convincingly sealed the match on the fourteenth – 5 and 4. He finished the day just one over par on gross 73.

Cedric van der Ross carded a gross 76 to return 43 individual stableford points and the win in Saturday’s IPS. The runner-up was Flexx Rantoa on 42. Several players returned 38 points.

The count-out deemed Hein Voight third and Hannes Herselman fourth.

Friday evening’s Sun Flamingo Niner had Lucky Tseisi the winner on 22 points. Three players followed on 21 points, Mikah Poonawassy, Flexx Rantoa and LJ Thomane. Allan Meyers was fifth on 20.

On Friday mid-morning, the Olympian Wanderers Cricket Club and Old Boys held their annual golf fund-raiser. An individual stableford, it was Allan Meyers who returned the top score, 42 points. Adrian McLaren was the runner-up on 39. Henk Visser was third on 38 in a count-out from LJ Thomane.

Despite the reasonably modest end result no less than seven players recorded a powerplay big six in the Thursday

KWV Niner, the three prizewinners were Luchmen Poonawassy (20), Nico Ross (19) and Kevin Wakeford (18).

The Konica Minolta Business League regularly registers the best monthly results, and it was certainly the case this Wednesday.

However, outperforming all was Andries Kori. Five under par after 14 holes he dropped his first shot at the 15th. He, however, recovered with a flourish completing the last three holes – par, birdie, eagle – to finish seven under par on a gross 65. His 43 individual stableford points took the top spot.

Stefan le Roux posted 42 points, followed by John O’Connell and Deuce Leburu, each on 40.

In the team section Andries Kori and Ivan Coetzee returned a just-winning 49 betterball points. They were closely followed by Charl Olivier and John O’Connell as well as Angelo Rodrigues and Harry Welham, both pairings on 48 betterball points.

The Leon’s House of Liquor IPS is scheduled for Wednesday. This will be followed by the KWV Niner on Thursday. Mid-morning on Friday, Nedbank will host a closed Corporate Golf Day. Midafternoon Friday is the Sun Flamingo Niner. This will be followed by the snowball draw which stands at R2 850. On

Saturday, it is the first round of the annual Winter Meat Challenge.

A reminder that Tuesday July 4 marks the opening for entry to the 2017 Barney

Barnato.
