USSA team announced for Summer Games in China
A LONE Sol Plaatje University (SPU) official and a local medic are among the 180-strong delegation of athletes and administrators selected to take part in the 29th Summer University Games due to take place in Taipei, China next month.
The South African delegation was announced at a gala event at the Flamingo entertainment complex on Friday night after the conclusion of the week-long inter-varsity table tennis championships hosted by SPU at the Mayibuye Sports Complex in Galeshewe.
SPU sports administrator Tshepo Masoeu and chief team Doctor Tshegofatso Gaetsewe were confirmed as part of the University Sports South Africa (USSA) team for the Games in Taipei from August 19-30.
Masoeu (pictured), who supervised the table tennis championships, said most of the SPU affiliated athletes had unfortunately not made the grade for selection in the USSA team.
However, the non-selection of SPU athletes was not a setback as it was “early days” yet for all athletes from the Northern Cape university.
Masoeu pointed out that they were still trying to get basic training facilities and associated infrastructure on track as part of the still growing university.
He said there were a few athletes at the institution who have shown a lot of promise and they will definitely be in contention for medals in the near future.
