Another hole-in-one notched up at KGC

- DAVE WILSON

A TOTAL of 32 players teed up on Saturday for the 18-hole individual and 18-hole betterball matchplay challenge over two days. With one match still outstanding yesterday it was Charlies Angels and Club 16 all square. The final match tilted the challenge in favour of the latter.

Also on Saturday, Gavin Schafer made few mistakes to card a gross 72. He also made some great shots, one of which produced a rear two club at the par four 15th. His 43 individual stableford points gave him a clear win in the St. Alban’s Church annual golf fund-raiser. Keenan Aysen, who also carded a gross 72, returned 41 points for second place. Bennie Claasen

(40) was third, Jakes Jacobs (39) was fourth and Jan van Vuuren (38) was fifth.

A shot-by-shot account of a hole played can be a tedious affair. Now and then it’s quick.

It was just so for Henk Visser on the par three fourth on Saturday. “I hit a seven iron.” And that was it. It was his very first hole-in-one.

Flexx Rantoa’s challenge for the 2017 Club Matchplay Championship was put to rest by Geoffrey van der Merwe last Tuesday. The match, it was said, was far tighter than the results suggest. This Wednesday LJ Thomane takes on the Club Strokeplay Champion Joshua Edwards while Nico Jacobs takes on Andries Kori.

Thirty-two players teed up in the Friday Sun Flamingo Niner in which the gusting wind did little to hamper the winning scores. A level par 36 for 21 points and the better count-out placed LJ Thomane first. John Palm, who carded a two under par gross 34, was the runner-up on the same score. Four players returned 20 points.

The count-out deemed Wade King third, Joshua Edwards (gross 34) fourth and Ramon Barlow fifth.

Two players, meanwhile, posted 25 points in the Thursday KWV Powerplay Niner. The count-out placed Wade King first and Ivan Coetzee second. Both players recorded a big six. Gerhard Roux was third on 23 points, his eight pointer on the 16th earning him two tickets in the draw. Further six-pointers were recorded by Alvin Botes and Ant Crozier.

Then on Wednesday, Johan Herselman once again rose to the occasion in the first monthly outing of the second half of the Konica Minolta Business League. 44 individual stableford points placed him a comfortable first in the individual section, while his partner, Willie Delport, added a further seven points to the betterball score – Cat Security thus the winning team on a rear 51 points.

In the individual section Ivan Coetzee was the runner-up on 41 points, George Moorcroft third in a three-way count on 40 points.

In the team section LJ Thomane and Bennie Andrews were the runners-up on 47 betterball points, George Moorcroft and Rocky Stander third on 45 points.

The top three teams in the the final placings of the first half of the Konica Minolta Business League were Spur / Rietpan (201), PA Walter Africa (199) and CS Diamonds (195). The top three individuals were Keith Brown (145), Eddie Barkhuizen (143) and Siewert Wiid (141).
