Biker killed in CBD crash
A LOCAL motorcyclist was killed in the Kimberley CBD yesterday morning when he collided with an SUV at a busy intersection.
Ruan du Toit, 23, was declared dead on the scene, while a case of culpable homicide is being investigated following the accident at the crossing of Long and Black streets shortly after 7am yesterday morning.
Rush hour traffic was brought to a standstill while dozens of onlookers watched officials clear the scene.
The wreckage of Du Toit’s motorbike caused an obstruction at the intersection, in all four directions, while the helmet of the deceased lay in Long Street, several metres from the point of impact.
A silver Hyundai Tucson SUV, with a severely damaged passenger door, could be seen in Black Street, a fair distance from the crossing.
“I was just arriving at work when the accident happened,” said an eyewitness on the scene yesterday. “The motorbike was travelling so fast that I don’t think the driver of the car saw him coming. The sun is terrible at that time of the day which already makes it very difficult to see other vehicles.
“The driver of the Hyundai was very shaken and in shock after the accident but did not appear to be too badly hurt.”
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Dimakatso Mooi, confirmed the incident, adding that a criminal case was being investigated.
“The police are investigating a case of culpable homicide following an accident that claimed the life of a 23-year-old man,” Mooi said yesterday.
“It is alleged that the victim was on a motorbike on the corner of Black and Long streets in Kimberley when a Hyundai motor vehicle collided with him. He was declared dead on the scene while the 69-year-old driver of the motor vehicle was taken to hospital with minor injuries.”
Du Toit leaves his mother and his girlfriend, Rochelle Bunting.
Bunting’s Facebook page was full of condolence messages yesterday as news of the accident spread through the city.
“He was a great man with a very soft heart,” posted Antoinette Smith.
“Rest in peace Ruan,” said Chris-Marie Botes. “Every strength to the family and Rochelle Bunting.”
“Nothing that anyone can say can make things better,” added Elri Greyling. “I can’t imagine the pain you are experiencing.”
“Just stay strong,” wrote Lehana Lee van Zyl. “Losing a loved one is never easy but you have to keep fighting. Stay strong. We are here for you.”
