THE SAPS has confirmed that Major-General Pat Mokushane, who has been removed from his position as acting head of crime intelligence, will return to the Northern Cape as provincial head of protection and security services in the Province.

SAPS spokesperson, Major-General Sally de Beer, said yesterday morning that Acting National Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Lesetja Mothiba, would oversee the functions of crime intelligence.

“This arrangement has already come into effect and will remain in place until further notice,” she said.

De Beer said Mokushane would be resuming his position as provincial head of protection and security services in the Northern Cape.

“Major-General Pat Mokushane, who was acting in the capacity of Divisional Commissioner of Crime Intelligence, will thus resume his permanent post as SAPS provincial head of protection and security services in the Northern Cape and he is thanked for his contribution over the past months,” the statement issued by De Beer said.

“The Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Lieutenant-General Lesetja Mothiba, has deemed it expedient in the interests of service delivery to personally oversee the functions of the Crime Intelligence Division.”

Mokushane has been dogged by controversy, including allegations that he dipped into the crime intelligence slush fund and that he was conducting his businesses from his police office.

Mothiba told MPs last week that he had initiated a probe into these allegations and would expect a report by the latest this week.

The fact that Mokushane still did not have top secret security clearance was also an issue. It emerged during a parliamentary meeting that Mokushane’s clearance certificate was printed without all the processes, including the evaluation of his application, being followed. The document was later rescinded.

Mokushane was appointed as the acting divisional commissioner of the SAPS’s Crime Intelligence Division in June this year.
