City family seeks answers after suicide

- BENIDA PHILLIPS STAFF REPORTER

A GALESHEWE family has been left searching for answers after a 22-year-old man hanged himself behind their shack in yet another suicide in the city.

The incident occurred on the same day and just a few hours after another 23-year-old man hanged himself inside a shack in Kagisho on Wednesday.

The body of Ebenezer (Eben) Nero was discovered by his sister, Lindsay Nero, early on Wednesday morning. According to Lindsay, she went to wake up her brother when she realised that he was running late for work.

“I went to Eben’s room before 7am on Wednesday morning to wake him and found him hanging from a pole behind shanty,” she said.

She added that she last saw her brother alive the night before when he went to bed.

Eben’s mother, Jennifer Nero, said that her son had so many plans for his future.

“Eben came to my room on Tuesday and said that he had a feeling that something bad would happen to him at work. I then prayed for him.”

She said she was also in the dark about what forced her son to take his own life.

“One of Eben’s colleagues came to see us after the incident and said that they had no problems with him at work.

“He said that he had a bright future ahead of him. “Eben was a bodybuilder and had won several medals. He did not have a girlfriend nor any children,” Jennifer said, describing him as the protector in the household.

Lindsay said that she now finds it difficult to sleep at night.

“I see my brother hanging everytime I close my eyes. I really do not know why he took his own life.”

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Majang Skalkie, yesterday confirmed the incident.

“Police have opened an inquest after the body of a young man was found in Witdam, Galeshewe.”

Police are also investigating an inquest following the death of a 23-year-old Kagisho man. He also committed suicide by hanging himself.

Family members and a traditional healer at the scene of the second suicide warned neighbours not to speak to the media.

Skalkie said that the second suicide occurred on Wednesday at about 12.30pm at Mtengis Street, Tswelelang Kagisho.
