Diamond Fields Advertiser

LETTER Taking action

-

SIR – With reference to . . . “Sol coming for illegal advertisers”, DFA, Thursday, September 14.

It’s satisfying to see that the municipality is going to take action against illegal advertisers by applying the applicable bylaws.

As stated in the article “not only do these signs obstruct the view of motorists, but create a dirty and disorderly look and feel to the city and a feeling of chaos . . . a city, considered extremely dirty with rubbish visible at any point”.

Residents of Kimberley will be pleased that the council intends cleaning up this filthy city and removing illegal signs that have been around for months and even years.

A few queries: Why did the local authority send workers (at least two), two supervisors as well as a team of seven security officials to remove the flag poles?

Were they expecting a mass riot . . . and imagine the cost to us poor taxpayers.

Imagine sending this crew to remove each of the hundreds of illegal advertisements that are swallowing the city.

Why was the Halfway House installation attacked before all the older infringements?

In the article the council clearly states the residents and business owners must realise that the pavements belong to the municipality and not them.

The Kimberley-owned pavement opposite the Half was excavated by the municipality and a huge hole left unprotected and filthy for months at a time, often cleaned by the Half staff.

The municipal pavements are often disgracefully dirty while the trees are not watered and left to die.

I live in Herlear and know that the Half, as it is affectionately known, is one of the tidiest, well kept businesses in Kimberley, often visited and enjoyed by the tourists that the city should welcome.

Ol’Man Kimberley
