Parents to fund-raise for coma teen
THE KIMBERLEY parents of a teenager fighting for his life in a Bloemfontein hospital, are hosting a fund-raiser this week in aid of their 19-year-old son, who has been in a coma for three months following a motorcycle accident.
Ruan Joubert, 19, was involved in a motorcycle accident on a farm outside Boshof on July 7 this year and sustained serious brain injuries. He was admitted to Bloemfontein Mediclinic shortly after, and remains in a coma almost three months later.
Joubert’s parents, Liesel and Beeno Joubert, have started a fund to assist with his medical expenses, not only while in hospital but also to assist with the rehabilitation treatment he will have to undergo once he wakes from the coma.
Liesel said yesterday that the fund would not only assist with Ruan’s medical expenses but she hoped that others in need would also benefit from it.
“We aim to use the fund to also help other families who cannot afford medical expenses incurred at not only hospitals but also rehabilitation facilities. We now know what it entails to have a family member in hospital for an extended period of time and want to help others too. Everyone tells you it will be a long road but nothing can fully prepare you for what lies ahead,” Liesel said.
She added that while it had been a difficult and tiring journey so far for her and her husband, it was a journey walked in faith in their God.
The fund-raiser, which will take the form of a 7km walk, has been dubbed “Walk for Ruan” and will be held on Saturday.
The walk will start at 7am for 7.30am at the Yonder premises and entries are R20 per person.
