Newcomers shine at start of season
ABC MOTSEPE league newcomers Tornado FC from Upington and United Rovers from De Aar have put their best foot forward, making a grand entrance in their opening games in the third division of the Safa conference.
In the coastal stream Tornado last Saturday edged near neighbours from Postmasburg Rasta Fa Eagles 3-2 at the Danie Khys Stadium in Upington. This was Tornado’s debut in the superior Safa league to which they won promotion from the lower SAB League in the ZF Mgcawu district.
Tornado will next come up against the same Rasta Fa Eagles this Saturday in the second of four eliminators of the Nedbank Cup competition at the AR Abass Stadium at noon. Tornado currently sit in fourth spot of the eight-member coastal stream with three points.
In the inland stream the newly inducted Rovers last week mercilessly clobbered Motsepe League veterans Olifantshoek Young Stars 5-0 at De Aar’s Mziwabantu Stadium.
This was the second outing in the league for Rovers. The De Aar club, who currently sit on top of the ABC Motsepe inland stream, have meanwhile also made it to the regional elimination rounds of the annual Nedbank Cup competition.
This prestigious cup competition kicks off this coming weekend in Kimberley and Upington at the Robert Gunda and AR Abass stadiums. (A full list of the Nedbank cup details in weekend fixtures).
Rovers will bequite confident as they have in the past two years comfortably made it to the knockout stages of the Nedbank Cup competition, where they were twice knocked out by seasoned Premier Soccer League teams in the last 16 stage of the tournament.
