Does the Soccer World Cup deserve all the fanfare?

go before the world’s attention turns to Russia in the coming month of June when the FIFA Confederat­ions Cup kicks off there.

But maybe that tournament in truth does not deserve the worship and tanks full of appreciati­on we pour upon it. Here is a thought.

To those not in the know the World Cup is strictly not for the poor. The last time I checked we paid $10 million for the ‘honour’ of printing that T-shirt, saying we were the proud hosts. That in any sane person’s book is a lot of money to massage the national ego.

Anyway, don’t for a minute think that the poorer countries, who have to be content with merely watching this football spectacle on the telly, are not craving for a bit of the action; and will bid for it at the drop of a hat just for the chance to also get fleeced, their national fiscus willing, of course.

As a matter of course, Some serious state organs around the world have made it their national duty to support their national associatio­ns to the hilt to get them ready to bid for just such an opportunit­y.

So you can bet your bottom dollar that somebody or some country somewhere is going to get skinned in broad daylight, much like were not so long ago.

To think that we paid all of that money only to end up packing our bags in the group stages.

Anyway, no amount of preaching is going to convince anyone anywhere on the planet that the world’s foremost tournament is strictly verboten on monetary grounds, especially, and is
