- NORMA WILDENBOER STAFF REPORTER

THE NORTHERN Cape Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Risimati Shivuri, was handed the sword of command by the Acting National Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Lesetja Mothiba, in Kimberley yesterday at a ceremony which also saw local police members honoured for their loyal years of service.

The MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Pauline Williams addressed the ceremony where members were awarded for having 20, 30 and 40 years of loyal service.

Mothiba also expressed his appreciation for the long and loyal service rendered by the recipients of medals. He urged them to continue serving the community with pride, loyalty and dignity.

He further commended Shivuri for showing courage and strength throughout his two years as a provincial commissioner.

Williams congratulated the medal recipients and thanked their families for supporting them throughout the years.

She said that although there were members who just come to work, there was a rare breed of police officials who woke up in the morning to put on their blue suit with pride and dignity, not even knowing whether they would return home safely.

The Provincial Excellence Awards, where appreciation will be given to members who went beyond the call of duty to ensure that communities are and feel safe, was held last night.
