Nehawu to hold its Provincial Day of Action

- SANDI KWON HOO CHIEF REPORTER

THE NATIONAL Education, Health, and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) will hold its Provincial Day of Action in Kimberley on November 17.

The event has been spurred on by the apparent inaction over alleged financial misconduct at the that Northern Cape Provincial Legislature, which was reported to the auditor-general (AG)’s office.

The issues relate to leave payouts made to the chief financial officer, as well as “irregular” payments made to the legislature secretary.

Nehawu general secretary Zola Saphetha stated that he had met with officials at the AG’s office in Johannesburg on Monday.

Clarify

“The union wished to clarify the role of the AG’s office in relation to its powers and auditing processes as well as its limitations in recommending and implementing remedial actions against transgressors.

“The meeting was intended to search for solutions on the matters at hand and it was also agreed that more discussions must unfold.”

Saphetha added that both parties agreed to convene a follow-up meeting in the next two weeks.

“We just hope that these discussions will bear fruit in relation to bringing to book those who transgress audit process and loot state resources.”

Saphetha added that they also held meetings in four regions in the Province to mobilise members to take part in the Provincial Day of Action next week.
