The choice of venue for the TKO final was a damp squib

-

Maybe to Celtics it is less so as they most times appear to have capacity attendances from their very loyal supporters who more than make up for the lack of support for teams visiting them in Mangaung.

I don’t usually knock mid-sized venues in any town, but the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu, Durban with its 12 000 seats, is really cutting it very thin for a cup final.

It is modest to the extreme compared to say, Soccer City at Nasrec in Johannesburg.

That stadium – Princess Magogo – might be OK for a the likes of the Clever Boys who have the bragging rights to a 5 000-seater venue at home in Parktown. But for Celtics that is a step down from the 22 000-seater Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium they call home.

On any good day the Siwelele take up about 50 percent of the seating on offer. And that’s just from those followers wearing the club’s colours.

So, had the Telkom bigwigs decided to instead favour central Mzansi with their final, I kid you not, they would have had a better turnout than the average spectator turnout that we witnessed on Saturday evening at Princess Magogo. As things turned out, looking at the many gaps on the grass embankments where the TV cameras frequently swept, it appears most Durbanites had other fish to fry on the night.

I hear you moan that such a decision was going to be unfair and in favour of the local side. Yes that may be true, but that cannot apply here as the event
