GOOLAM Akharwaray will continue to serve as Sol Plaatje municipal manager for the next five years after he was announced as the most suitable candidate during a council meeting yesterday.
No objections were received against his appointment and he will take office with immediate effect.
Akharwaray’s contract was extended by council after it had expired at the end of August.
He was first employed at Sol Plaatje as municipal manager in August 2009.
Akharwaray’s new contract will be a fixed five-year term.
Manager in the office of the executive mayor, George Mosimane, stated that Akharwaray’s remuneration package would be in line with the benchmark of municipal managers employed at a Grade Six municipality as stipulated in the government gazette.
According to the 2017/18 budget, the Sol Plaatje municipal manager is entitled to an all-inclusive annual package of R2.2 million.
Akharaway may have to accept a slightly lower salary than his previous contract.
He was selected out of a pool of 10 internal and external candidates who were interviewed for the position.
Two directors from Sol Plaatje Municipality were among the top five candidates to be shortlisted for the position, including the executive director of strategy, economic development and planning, Nomonde Tyabashe-Kesiamang, and the executive director of community and social development, Khuza Bogacwi.
Sol Plaatje executive mayor Mangaliso Matika congratulated Akharawaray on his re-appointment, along with Boy Dhlwayo who was appointed as executive director for infrastructure yesterday.
