Best results in years for city school
KIMBERLEY’S St Patrick’ Christian Brothers’ College has achieved a 100% pass rate in this year’s Independent Examinations Board (IEB) exams in the school’s best ever results in several years, with one local learner, Bilal Waleed, being placed in the top one percent in the country for maths.
According to school principal, Jacques Tredoux, Waleed, together with fellow learner, Chara Glynos, both obtained seven distinctions each, including A symbols for advanced programme maths, which is an additional optional subject, placing them among the top in the Province.
“Bilal was also placed in the top one percent in the country for maths,” Tredoux said.
Two other Northern Cape IEB learners, K Lechet and J Van Heerden, obtained five distinctions each.
The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) yesterday announced a 98.7% matric pass rate, with all the 2017 cohort of matriculants who passed being about to enter tertiary study.
Three schools in the Northern Cape wrote the IEB exams – Curro Private School in Kathu, Hoërskool Oliphantshoek Akademie vir CVO and St Patrick’s CBC in Kimberley.
Tredoux yesterday was delighted with the achievements of his learners.
“I am extremely pleased with this year’s results, which are the best since 2008 and saw a 100% pass rate,” Tredoux said. “St Patrick’s learners obtained a combined total of 23 subject As, and 24 subject Bs, while the grade average was a very impressive 67.35%.
“Eleven of our 13 learners obtained entry to degree studies (BD), while two learners qualified for diploma studies. The class of 2017 has done exceptionally and we look forward to maintaining our academic standard in the future,” Tredoux added.
Besides Waleed and Glynos, another learner from the school, Matthew Williams, achieved seven B symbols, while other top achievers included Darren Thompson, who obtained three As and four Bs and Tando Nkungwana with three As and three Bs.
