. . . while our water crisis continues

- NORMA WILDENBOER STAFF REPORTER

WHILE Kimberley continues to suffer under extreme heat, there is no indication yet from the Sol Plaatje Municipality (SPM) when the ongoing water cuts will end.

Residents spent the weekend finding ways to escape the current heatwave being experienced in the city, while water cuts from 9pm to 5am were still being implemented by the municipality, only adding to the frustration of “hot and bothered” residents.

Municipal spokesperson, Sello Matsie, yesterday said that the water supply reserves are still “building up” with three pumps running at the moment to supply the Kimberley Water System and the Newton Reservior.

“As of yesterday the levels were picking up steadily, but given the high summer consumption, we would prefer to build the reserves to full capacity.

“The two mega reservoirs were at 80 percent while the other two smaller ones were at 60 percent. We will continue to build up the reservoirs by temporarily interrupting supply at night from Newton Reservoir until levels have been restored to full capacity,” Matsie said.

Meanwhile residents can expect a slight in drop in temperature during the week, with maximum temperatures of 32 degrees Celsius for today, 34 degrees for tomorrow and 31 degrees forecasted for Wednesday and Thursday.

By Friday temperatures will soar into the high thirties again, with 37 degrees maximum forecaste for Friday, 36 degrees for Saturday and 36 degrees for Sunday.
