All systems go as SAB league gets ready to resume

- NEVILLE MOTLHABAKWE SPORTS REPORTER

THE SAFA Frances Baard SAB Regional Football League will restart this weekend with a slew of catch-up matches that were delayed because some teams were involved in the mid-season Nedbank Cup competition.

The restart finds newcomers Pescodia Porto FC still lodged firmly at the top of the 16 member fourth division league. Porto have yet to lose a game.

They have bagged nine wins from 11 matches and only drawn two games thus far; this gives them 29 log points, which is five points more than runners-up Real Madrid who have 24 points from 11 games, with three drawn matches. Porto also brags with the least goals scored against them at nine while they have netted 28 times against their opponents.

All the catch-up games will be played on Sunday.

Phokwane Stars, who are third on the log, will come up against bottom-feeder team The Students in a 4pm slot in Pampierstad.

Kwa-Nobantu Celtics will meet Real Madrid at 2pm at the Galeshewe Stadium while Windsorton Young Stars will attempt to pluck the feathers of Chicken Inn FC in Windsorton town in a 2pm fixture.

Galeshewe Stadium will on the same Sunday host its second game of the day between Cameroon FC and Tswelopele at 4pm.

Apart from The Students holding up the bottom rung of the log, Hartswater’s Bonita Sundowns are, as per their usual seasonal position, hovering just above the Students with whom they share a measly three points from their 12 games.

A source at Safa said the league might likely wrap up the current season before the winter, bar any major mishaps.

This year (2018) will also see the introduction of single stream leagues for both the fourth division in the Northern Cape as well as the Sasol Women’s League.

The women’s league has also been promised semi-professional status as Safa and the petroleum company have pledged a much improved purse for the league winner.
