Young Northern Cape golfers impress at KGC

A TOTAL of 44 young players, ranging from under-11s to under-19s, from afar afield as Calvinia, Alexander Bay, Upington and Sishen teed up in the NC Junior Open over the weekend and returned most creditable rounds.

From the first tee the 2018 NC Senior Society Championsh­ip was poised to be a particular­ly keen challenge on Sunday.

After 12 holes little separated the leading covey when inclement weather forced the cancellati­on of round one.

The tournament is to be decided over 18 holes on Sunday morning.

The defending champion, Nico Ross, and the 2016 champion, Nigel Page, were level pegs after 15 holes.

However, Page finally gained the upper hand to finish two ahead to reclaim the title on the 18th.

The gross results were Nigel Page 77, Nico Ross 79, and Gavin Schafer 83.

In the net section it was Harry Welham 74, Barend Burger 74 and Johnny Cloete 75.

On Saturday, in the Monthly Medal, inclement weather saw only 24 players return a card, well under the required 50% of the field, the competitio­n result is therefore cancelled.

Nonetheles­s it is worth recording that two players Kaream Anderson and Christo Swanepoel each posted a net 66 on the day.

Competitiv­e scores were the order of the afternoon in Friday’s Sun Flamingo Niner.

Ultimately 23 points, after a gross 35, placed LJ Thomane one ahead of the field. Two players returned 22 points, the count-out deemed Kaream Anderson second and Flexx Rantoa third.

Two players followed on 21 points each, Luchmen Poonawassy placed fourth and Ivan Coetzee placed fifth.

Dave Wilson posted two six pointers and 25 points to win the Thursday KWV Powerplay Niner.

Evan Painting, with a big six on the final hole, was the runner up on 20 points.

A count-out on 18 points placed Nico Ross third. He carded a six pointer on the 16th.

Outside of the prize winners Bernie Bennett, Dave Benade, Willy Uys and Jock Robey each recorded a big six.

Nigel Page carded a gross 77 for 40 individual stableford points to win the Wednesday Club Competitio­n.

Lennie Allen was the runner up on 39 points. Angelo Rodrigues was third on 36 points in a count out from Gavin Schafer.
