THE SOL Plaatje Municipality has urged residents to pay outstanding rates and taxes owed to the municipality (which stand in excess of R1 billion), before embarking on Easter Weekend festivities.

Municipal spokesperson, Sello Matsie, while wishing visitors to Kimberley and residents travelling for religious reasons a blessed Easter Weekend, yesterday urged residents to pay all municipal rates and taxes in arrears ahead of the Easter Weekend.

“Water supply has been restored to the city’s taps and the municipality has been hard at work cleaning streets and creating a welcoming atmosphere in Kimberley. We now ask residents to bring their outstanding rates and taxes owed to the municipality up to date,” Matsie said.

He stated further that the city would become an entertainment hub over the weekend, highlighted by the flagship music festival Diamond and Dorings, which is expected to attract about 10 000 visitors.

Matsie indicated that traffic and law enforcement officials would be “out in full force” during the weekend and would be maintaining a zero-tolerance attitude towards illegal activities, specifically with regard to drinking and driving and texting/talking on a cellphone while driving.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Dimakatso Mooi, further warned residents that the Easter Weekend was a time when criminals were “upping their game” and taking advantage of unsuspecting people.

Travelling

“It is that time of the year again, Easter holidays are upon us and many people will be travelling to different holiday destinations and church gatherings. As the police in the Northern Cape, we will also be out in full force in ensuring that our communities are and feel safe.

“There are planned operations in place. No criminals will be left scot-free and those drinking under the influence will also face the might of the law.

“We urge our community members not to let their guard down but to always be wary of their surroundings. Safety begins with an individual, therefore we advise the community to take charge on their home security measures,” Mooi said.
