Dept promotes physical education

- MURRAY SWART STAFF REPORTER

AS PART of a global initiative to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle in schools, the Northern Cape Department of Education (NCDOE) will be hosting the 2018 Physical Education (PE) Symposium in Kimberley this weekend.

Presented in conjunction with the national Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the Physical Education Institute of South Africa (PEISA), the fourth instalment of this annual event forms part of Physical Education Month, which starts on Friday, under the theme “Quality Physical Education in Action!”

Spokesperson for the NCDOE, Geoffrey van Der Merwe, explained that the provincial department would be using the opportunity, presented at the Protea Hotel this weekend and until PE Month draws to a close on May 10, to target Life Skills and Life Orientation curriculum education specialists as part of Unesco’s Quality Physical Education (QPE) project which is aligned with national government’s policy on PE.

“The symposium is central to a series of established PE advocacy and sector mobilisation campaigns, held as part of the department and PEISA’s annual calendar.

“This year’s symposium will also see the first ever Physical Education Teacher Awards, in recognition for excellence in the teaching of PE and to give due credit and respect to the profession,” added Van der Merwe.

This weekend’s training sessions will be on offer at the Protea Hotel, from 8am today and tomorrow.
