Five killed in taxi crash

FIVE people died and several others were injured after the taxi they were travelling in rolled on the N14, about 10 kilometres from Kathu, on Saturday night.

Police spokesperson, Captain Sergio Kock, said that the accident occurred after one of the taxi’s tyres apparently burst.

“On Saturday, April 21, at about 5pm, a taxi travelling with people from Laxy Village, situated close to Kuruman, apparently had a tyre burst and rolled several times. Four women died at the scene and another one died hours later in Kuruman Hospital,” said Kock.

He added that eleven other people were injured and hospitalised.

Kock said that police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

ER24 spokesperson, Annine Siddall said paramedics found some passengers ejected from the taxi upon arrival at the scene.

“ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene and found multiple patients ejected from the taxi.

“Four adults were declared dead on the scene by other emergency services.

“ER24 transported a patient in a critical condition to Kuruman Hospital and two people who sustained moderate injuries were transported to hospital by other emergency services,” said Siddall.

She added that the cause of the accident is not known and authorities are investigating the incident.
