Relentless Proteas Women march on unhindered

- DAVE ALEXANDER SPORTS REPORTER

ANOTHER clinical, all-round performance by the Momentum Proteas saw the national team notch up another win against the Bangladesh Women’s team, this time by 154 runs when they met for the fourth Cricket South Africa (CSA) Women’s ODI in at the Diamond Oval on Friday.

The hosts are now four-nil up in the five-match series.

The Proteas Women elected to bat first and in their 50 overs posted a useful 230/7, with skipper of the day, the powerful KZN batsman Chloe Tryon, slamming 60 from 40 balls.

Mexican Sergio Perez was ninth for Force India and Monegasque rookie Charles Leclerc took the final point for Sauber.

Yesterday’s race was, however, not without incident.

While Hamilton pulled away cleanly at the start, and Vettel passed Bottas into the first corner for second place, there was carnage behind as Romain Grosjean spun his Haas in a cloud of smoke.

The Frenchman then collected the Renault of

Nico Hulkenberg and Pierre Gasly’s Toro Rosso in a major smash, fortunately without injury, that brought out the safety car for the first six laps.

When racing resumed Vettel was first of the leading group to pit but the Mercedes pair stayed out on what turned out to be a onestop strategy, with Hamilton immediately smashing the lap record.

When Vettel made his second stop during a late virtual safety car period, after Esteban Ocon parked up his Force India by the side of the track, it backfired and he lost a place instead of gaining anything.

Verstappen, whose season has been littered with collisions, also nearly wrecked his race when he hit the rear of Canadian Lance Stroll’s Williams and lost a front wing end-plate.

The opening pair of Laura Wolvaardt and Lizelle Lee put on 72 runs in their opening stand before Wolvaardt was out on 32. After that, to the determined visitors’ credit, wickets fell at regular intervals, except for a 48-run third wicket partnership between Lee and Trisha Chetty. Lee was eventually dismissed for a patient and well played 70.

A very slow start

Bangladesh’s Nahida Akter (2/36) and Jahanara Alam (2/54) had the most success with the ball for the visitors.

The Bangladesh’s batting reply was once again punctuated by regular strikes by the Proteas as the visitors got off to a very slow start, maintaining at best a run rate of not more than 2.6 runs per over while losing wickets regularly.

In the end Bangladesh were dismissed for 76 in 33.1 overs, with the top scorer being Fargana Hoque with 22.

The pick of the Proteas bowlers were Shabnim Ismail 2/8 from 7 overs, Raisibe Ntozakhe 2/10 also from 7 and Sune Luus 2/12 from 3 overs.

The last match of the series is set to take place at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein this morning with the confident hosts looking set to whitewash Bangladesh in spectacular fashion.
