SOCCER GREATS TO BE HONOURED

GALESHEWE’S former sports heroes will be honoured at a grand banquet event organised by the Sol Plaatje Masters Football League in collaborat­ion with the local municipali­ty and the provincial department of Sport, Arts and Culture.

Spokespers­on for the organisers Archie Jack said the Associatio­n will host the event to honour former football greats at what is called the Golden Games, which will take place on July 8 at the Galeshewe Stadium, with games also being played at the AstroTurf in Lang street.

The banquet will be held a week later on July 14 at the Mayibuye indoor sports centre in Hulana street, Galeshewe.

Jack said the Golden Games will honour the City’s football legends, and mentioned names such as Edward “Masonic” Plaatje, Peter Mogotsi, Mthethelel­i “Scara” Qhinga and Jerry Tshazibane.

In addition a number of football administra­tors such as Patric Mabula, Victor Mathane, Peet Assegaai and the late Wayne Manong will also be fêted.

Teams from the Masters League, Sundowns Supporters Football Club, Orlando Pirates Supporters Football Club, Kaizer Chiefs Supporters Football Club, SAPS Football Club, DSAC Football Club and Sol Plaatje Municipali­ty Masters Football Club will take part in the Golden Games honorary event on July 8.

The winners of the Golden Games will go home with a trophy and 20 gold medals while the runners-up will be awarded 20 silver medals. Entrance to the venues will be free of charge to the public.
