Warrant of arrest for man accused of theft and fraud

- NORMA WILDENBOER STAFF REPORTER

A WARRANT of arrest was yesterday issued for Dirk Booysen, the Kimberley man facing several fraud and theft charges after allegedly stealing petrol cards from DFA vehicles and using them for his personal use at petrol stations across the city.

Booysen, 27, yesterday failed to appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court, and a warrant for his arrest was issued “with immediate effect”.

He is likely to now forfeit his bail and remain in custody until his case is finalised.

He was scheduled to appear on 19 fraud charges, relating to the fraudulent use of petrol cards belonging to DFA fleet vehicles, which he allegedly stole from the vehicles, and then used them to buy petrol to the value of nearly R10 000 at several filling stations across the City. The alleged incidents took place between March 3 and May 6 2017.

Booysen also faces four theft charges, including an incident that relates to the alleged theft of items to the value of R979.90 from Edgars in Kimberley on August 23 2017, and the alleged theft of a subwoofer and bluetooth sound bar to the value of R12 000 from the Heerengracht Guesthouse in Kimberley on May 7 2017.

Account

Another fraud charge against Booysen relates to a R2 754 account which he allegedly failed to settle after spending two nights (April 9 to 11 2017) at Kalahari Lodge with his girlfriend.

After Booysen was yesterday marked absent in court, his legal representative, Justice Magade, indicated that he had “no idea” where is client was. The case was set down for the defence to prepare a plea agreement.

Magistrate Pauline Coollen, after noting that Booysen resides in Royldene, stated that the area was not affected by the recent protest actions in the city and she proceeded to order that an immediate warrant of arrest be issued against Booysen.

After the proceedings, Magade indicated that Boysen would now most likely forfeit his bail and remain in custody for the remainder of his trial after his re-arrest.

Booysen had previously been warned to appear on scheduled dates or face re-arrest and be remanded in custody.
