Pupils, workers celebrate science

- BENIDA PHILLIPS STAFF REPORTER

ABOUT 240 Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP) employees were yesterday educated about various science fields during the National Science Week hosted by the South African Agency for Science and Technology (Saatsa).

The spokesperson for South African Environmental Observation Network (Seon), Omphile Khutsoane, said the programme was an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology and encouraged a celebration of science.

“National Science Week is a country-wide celebration of science involving various stakeholders and role-players conducting science-based activities during the week. The programme is running in all nine provinces simultaneously at multiple sites per province. The celebrations will attract hundreds of people, including school pupils from Grades 9 to 11 as well as community members. Celebrations in Kimberley are taking place at the McGregor Museum,” said Khutsoane.

She said it was decided to involve EPWP employees in order to involve the public.

“There are various information stalls and science experiments conducted for attendees. Attendees were also equipped with information on the various science fields they may want to pursue. The aim of the event is also to encourage pupils to venture into environmental science careers,” Khutsoane said.

Pupils from Vuyolwethu High School and EPWP employees from wards in Galeshewe will attend the programme today.
