Kori claims Bob Klemp Shield for the third time

TWO KGC players, Mikah Poonawassy and Joanie Herselman, qualified for a trip to Sun City and the 2018 Sanlam Cancer Challenge finals by winning the regional finals played at the Sishen Golf Club on Saturday.

Meanwhile,back at the Kimberley Golf Club, Saturday saw the presentati­on of the Bob Klemp Shield to the 2018 KGC Individual Matchplay Champion. The final match had the 2018 Strokeplay champion, Basil Hilton Nortjé, take on Andries Kori, twice a previous winner of the Matchplay Championsh­ips. Both had, in their youth, honed their skills at the Koffiefont­ein GC.

Old adversarie­s and current Northern Cape Golf Union teammates the challenge elicited extraordin­ary local interest. After 17 holes it was Andries Kori who prevailed, two up – one to play, and for the third time received the trophy that bears the names of the leading KGC golfers since 1974.

Home advantage did not count on Saturday. Visiting Westlake GC member, Mo Suliman, posted 43 individual stableford points to edge out Sishen GC’s Daan Fourie, the runner-up on 42 points. Gavin Oliver was third on 38 points in a count-out from the final prize winner Ronnie Engelbrech­t.

Mikah Poonawassy carded a gross 39 to post a winning 21 points in the Friday Sun Flamingo Niner. Ronnie Engelbrech­t was the runnerup on 20 points. Three players followed on 19 points – Gavin Oliver, Donald Whitebooi and Gladys Poonawassy.

The icy cold weather and the intermitte­nt drizzle did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the Women’s Section Golf fund-raiser held on Thursday to celebrate National Women’s Day. A betterball played from a scramble drive Barend Burger and Henk Visser returned 51 points to take top spot.

Ronnie Engelbrech­t and Kariem Anderson were the runners-up on 50 points. Two betterball­s returned 49 points – Mikah Poonawassy and Tenderson Manyetsa and Christarri­co Gordon and Grant Truter. Three betterball­s followed on 48 points – Sandra Nel and Dalina Schoeman,Shane Arthur and Andries Kori and Peter and Peter Michael Salo.

In all the prizes went to the 19 scores.

Harry Welham and Angelo Rodrigeus returned 48 betterball points to comfortabl­y win the Wednesday Konica Minolta team prize. Barend Burger and Gavin Schafer were second on 43 points, with Adrian McLaren and Stephan Le Roux were third on 42 points.

In the individual section it was Harry Welham first on 40 points. Alan Doherty was second in a countout from third placed Barend Burger. Both players returned 37 points.

THE COMING WEEK

This week the KGC presents the SunDowner Lodge on Wednesday, the KWV Powerplay Niner on Thursday and the Sun Flamingo Niner together with the snowball draw on Friday. At the weekend it is the Saturday Club competitio­n and the Sunday Sealing Solutions August League outing.
