NC gets new junior ‘top cop’
THE NORTHERN Cape has a new Junior Provincial Police Commissioner – Grade 9 pupil Sandisiwe Ndulelisa.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Dimakatso Mooi, said yesterday that Ndulelisa was appointed following a public speaking competition held on Saturday in Upington.
“The competition was aimed at appointing a Junior Provincial Management which will be led by a Junior Provincial Commissioner. The competition was between grades 8 and 9 pupils who came from five clusters within the Province. Each cluster was represented by five pupils, making a total of 25 participants.”
The event was attended by the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Risimati Peter Shivuri, together with his Provincial Management.
In his keynote address, Shivuri explained that through the project the youth would learn to take responsibility for their own safety and that of others by taking the lead in the fight against crime.
The competition was adjudicated by five judges, including two officials from the SAPS, and one official each from the departments of Education and Social Development and the Community Police Board. A common rubric evaluation sheet from the Department of Education was utilised to ensure standardisation and uniformity.
After a very informative, educational session and deliberations between the judges the winners were announced.
Ndulelisa from the Frances Baard Cluster took first position as the Junior Provincial Commissioner, followed in second place by Zinathi Thomas from Pixley Ka Seme, who will occupy the position of Junior Deputy Provincial Commissioner: Crime Detection and in third place Umamele Mudumele, also from Francis Baard Cluster, will be the Junior Deputy Provincial Commissioner: Policing.
The fourth place was taken by Munyaradzi Marufu, Francis Baard Cluster, who will be the Junior Deputy Provincial Commissioner: Asset Management and the fifth place was won by Ndawa Mabaye of Namakwa Cluster who will be the Junior Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Human Resource Management.
Other pupils will occupy offices as Junior Provincial Heads, thus ensuring that all the participants are winners.
“The SAPS will continue to promote and to nurture leadership development and character building among young people in our society and also recognise the young people as key role-players in addressing crime in our communities,” Mooi said.
