KIMBERLEY A 40-year-old male Nigerian national has been arrested in the city after he was found in possession of drugs with an estimated street value of almost R300 000.

Members of the Kimberley Police Trio Task team this weekend arrested the suspect in a room at a hotel in Squarehill Park after he was found in possession of

860 mandrax tablets, with an estimated street value of R51 600, 541.1 grams of cat, with an estimated street value of R119 482, and 405.1 grams of tik, with an estimated street value of R121 530.

Police spokespers­on, Colonel Mashay Gamieldien, said that the total estimated street value of the drugs is R292 612.

The suspect was also found in possession of R23 300 cash, which was seized during the raid.

The Deputy Provincial Commission­er for Crime Detection in the Northern Cape, Major-General Koliswa Otola, lauded the the task team members for their quick response and profession­al conduct during the execution of the raid and the apprehensi­on of the suspect. The suspect was charged with dealing in drugs and will appear in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court soon.

KURUMAN Five suspects have been arrested following a business robbery and attempted murder in Batlharos, Kuruman.

The arrest happened on Friday after police followed up on informatio­n and the alleged stolen money, together with live ammunition, was recovered from the suspects.

“It is alleged that on August

15, 2018, the five suspects robbed two foreign nationals of an undisclose­d amount of money at their tuck shop. The suspects allegedly shot the victims before they fled from the scene. Both victims are currently in hospital.

“All five suspects, aged between 25 and 32 years old, are expected to appear before the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of business robbery, attempted murder and possession of live ammunition,” police spokespers­on, Lieutenant-Colonel Dimakatso Mooi, stated.

NATIONAL The commission of inquiry into state capture provided South Africa an opportunit­y to be on a new path away from degenerati­on, said former ANC MP and witness to the commission Vytjie Mentor.

Mentor, who will testify on August 27, said yesterday it was important for all to monitor and follow the commission when it starts today.

“The chapter of the commission is very important in putting our country on a new path away from the degenerati­on and chaos of the past 10 years. Let us please join hands together to follow the commission,” she said.

“In this way we could be able to wrestle our country from the abyss and doldrums that it has been plunged into whilst we looked on hopelessly,” Mentor added.

She made her comments ahead of today’s proceeding­s which will be opened by Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo in Parktown, Johannesbu­rg.
