‘MATIKA, WE ARE READY’
COMMUNITY members are ready to stage another city-wide shutdown in the event that Sol Plaatje executive mayor Mangaliso Matika returns to office.
During a meeting that was held at the Galeshewe circle last night, to brief community members on yesterday’s court proceedings, some community members even advocated that protest action should resume as from today.
“We don’t want Matika, he is no longer the mayor, he must go. There is an acting mayor in place until the finalisation of the court matter. If the court verdict is not in favour of the motion of no confidence in Matika and he refuses to vacate office, we will be ready. Let crime intelligence pass on the message to Matika that we are ready,” they insisted.
Community members also challenged the ANC to remove Matika ahead of the outcome of the court case, where judgment is expected to be handed down on or before the end of the month.
“Matika must be removed so that we can carry on with our lives.”
Community representative and spokesperson for local crime-fighting organisation Wanya Tsotsi, Pantsi Obusitse, pointed out that small businesses were suffering from being forced to pay a R260 levy on electricity.
“They are struggling to make profits and yet are forced to fork out R260 each month. We must play our part and stand up if something is wrong,” said Obusitse.
He also called on the community to join in the search for an eight-year-old Platfontein girl, Melissa Kanguya, who went missing last week Thursday after apparently fleeing from a teenage boy who allegedly tried to rape her.
The search will commence at 9am today.
