More service points to cut post office queues

MOTOR vehicle licence renewals can be done at both the Kimberley Post Office on the Market Square as well as the Pescodia Post Office in Eagle Street in Roodepan.

Long queues at the Kimberley Post Office, which is now issuing motor vehicle licences as well as paying social grants, have caused frustration among city residents.

The spokesperson for the provincial Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison, Keitumetse Moticoe, said yesterday that the department had noted with concern, during monitoring of the service, the need to better capacitate some post offices to enable communities to access the service far more efficiently.

“Thus, through ongoing consultations with the South African Post Office (Sapo) to ensure efficient access to the service, two more additional service points will be added at the Kimberley Post Office to relieve the pressure of the demand for the service. We envisage that the additional service points will be operational by the end of October.”

Moticoe added that as part of an ongoing process, depending on the numbers of the population, the service points in the respective post offices may be increased, and necessary monitoring will continue, to ensure that the community derives the convenience envisioned with the relocation of the service.

“We have also noted the post office’s increased pressure during the grant-payments period and, as part of our discussions with the management of Sapo, we have requested the post office to also look into the matter as to ensure that services are not disrupted.

“Where capacity constraints are observed, necessary interventions will be made and we will continue to monitor the situation.”
