- SANDI KWON HOO CHIEF REPORTER

ANC YOUTH League (ANCYL) member Howard Seekoei, 34, will appear in the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court today for a bail application on charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and pointing a firearm.

It is alleged that he pointed a firearm at his girlfriend’s friend and assaulted his girlfriend on October 7.

Seekoei, who has the support of the ANCYL Percival Jas branch as its preferred candidate for the position of ANCYL provincial chairperson, was arrested on October 8.

“The branch has resolved to support one of their own and rally behind Seekoei as a contender in the upcoming ANCYL provincial conference,” the branch said in a statement.

The ANCYL did not respond to media enquiries relating to its stance on issues of domestic violence as well as violence towards women.

It also did not confirm whether Seekoei would be able to campaign for the position of ANCYL provincial chairperson in light of the criminal charges he was facing or whether any internal disciplinary steps would be taken against him.

Meanwhile, a well-known former ANC ward councillor was arrested yesterday on a charge of rape.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Majang Skalkie, confirmed that a 44-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a 27-year-old woman.

“The incident took place in an open piece of veld behind Promise Land, Kagisho. The suspect was arrested on Monday at about 2.05pm. He will appear in the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday (tomorrow) on charges of rape.”
