Campaign against crime

THE GALESHEWE Police, Men for Change and the Women’s Network, in partnership with the Provincial SAPS Band, held an awareness campaign at the Madiba informal settlement in Kimberley to highlight the scourge of crime in the area.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Majang Skalkie, said the area was one of the city’s crime hot spots.

“The purpose of the campaign was to sensitise the community about crime in the area. Madiba shacks is one of the hot spots in Galeshewe with crimes ranging from assaults, rapes and housebreaking and theft,” said Skalkie.

“Men for Change encouraged the men to stand up and not to be silent about women abuse and crimes against women and children. The Women’s Network chairperson, Felicity Meyer, also addressed the community about the misuse of liquor, especially during school holidays, and as we approach the festive season.

“The Sector C manager, Sergeant Celeste Mackay, warned the community not to buy stolen property and encouraged community members to report crime to the police.”

Skalkie urged parents to look after their children and to establish a sector crime forum. “By establishing a forum, we can build a good relationship between the community and the police,” she said.
