THE POLICE in Upington have confiscated drugs, with an estimated street value of R25

000, that were discovered hidden inside a bag of vegetables.

Two male suspects were arrested during the incident that occurred on Sunday evening along the N14.

According to information received, Upington Public Order Policing members were conducting stop and searches on the N14.

“The members noticed two males at a hiking spot who seemed restless when they saw the police. One of them threw a bag he was carrying on the ground and started running away. Some of the members chased him while the others remained to search the rest of the people who were at the hiking spot. The suspect who ran away was caught and his bag was searched. Vegetables were found inside the bag and upon closer inspection the members discovered that there were mandrax tablets concealed inside the vegetables. The 248 tablets, with an estimated street value of R25 000, as well as a cellphone suspected to have been stolen during a housebreaking, were confiscated,” police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Dimakatso Mooi, said.

She added that the suspects, two foreign nationals aged 35 and 36 years old, were expected to appear before the Upington Magistrate’s Court today on charges of dealing in drugs and possession of suspected stolen property.
