Cooler start for Barney Barnato

PARTICIPAN­TS in the historical Barney Barnato tournament which starts this week can look forward to some cooler weather.

The 2018 tournament will start with the Golf Shop-sponsored Mini Barney tomorrow, a nine-hole event that offers more than one opportunit­y at the half round.

Hannah on Patio will greet the incoming afternoon players.

A prize-giving and karaoke will follow.

Four days of individual stableford tournament­s, morning and afternoon fields, commence on Wednesday. SITA the opening sponsor. Wednesday is also the annual Demo Day where all the top brands will exhibit.

GAGE and TK will follow the opening ceremony and the prize-giving, while nightly DJ Garth will burn the midnight oil.

John Dory’s presents the Thursday tournament, with Coca-Cola providing the evening entertainm­ent, URBANPRose.

Sun Flamingo underwrite the Friday event. This will include the band Tye Platinum.

Saturday, the final day, is sponsored by the Halfway House Hotel.

The final day’s prize-giving will also give due recognitio­n to the Overall Order of Merit winners.

The 4 J’s and DJ Garth will play out the final night.

In all some 300 different players and 700 rounds are anticipate­d, more than 50% through visitors.

The first of the Australian­s and the Capetonian­s are already on site.

2018 marks the 29th Anniversar­y of the Barney Barnato.

The Blacklaws Betterball Matchplay Finals will coincide with the Mini Barney tomorrow.

This is also the much-anticipate­d final of the 2018 KGC Betterball Matchplay Championsh­ips. The first complete women’s entry in the history of the event, Venetia Salo and Gail Aysen, take on PJ Gerber and Peter Jansen.

It is standing room only. The winners will receive the Blacklaws’ Trophy.

No less than three players returned 43 individual stableford points in Saturday’s IPS-sponsored by Reach for a Dream.

Luchmen Poonawassy won on the count-out (gross 73), while Franscois Schwartz and Dawood Jardine finished second and third respective­ly.

Poonawassy carded a level par gross 36 to post a winning 29 points in the Thursday KWV Powerplay Niner. His round included an eight pointer and a six pointer.

Ivan Coetzee, who also scored an eight pointer and a six pointer, was the runner up on 26 points.

Mikah Poonawassy, an eight pointer on the third that ensured the better count out, was placed third on 25 points. She carded a gross 40 off the blue tees.

Outside of the prize winners there were a further three eight pointers and nine six pointers recorded.

Gavin Schafer was deemed first on 38 points in the Wednesday Sundowner Lodge IPS.

Tenderson Manyetsa was the runner up on a similar score. A four-way count out placed Mike Doherty third on 37 points.
