School gets disability-friendly computer lab
PUPILS at Learamele Special School in Kuruman saw the opening of a computer laboratory aimed at enhancing their educational needs and experience.
The laboratory was unveiled by the Deputy Minister of Social Development, Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu, on Friday and forms part of the Disability Rights Awareness Month (DRAM) which is annually commemorated from November 3 to December 3 in South Africa.
“The pupils, who suffer from conditions such as attention deficit disorder and epilepsy, will receive a computer laboratory that is furnished with 21 disability-friendly computers with responsive programmes and an interactive board to enhance their educational needs. The school, founded in 1985, has 146 pupils and 56 employees including ground staff. It also has a hostel which accommodates 100 pupils,” Bopape-Zulu said.
The launch was followed by an awareness campaign aimed at addressing the rights of people living with albinism.
The plight of people living with albinism was demonstrated through a play called “Mama, I Want the Black That You Are” which took place at the Northern Cape Theatre in Kimberley on Friday evening.
Bogopane-Zulu said that the two launches from part of the centenary celebration of the lives of late president Nelson Mandela and Albertina Nontsikelelo Sisulu who contributed to the struggle for liberation of all South Africans.
