- NORMA WILDENBOER STAFF REPORTER

THE POLICE have welcomed the sentencing of a 31-yearold man to 20 years imprisonment for raping two women.

Marvin Matthews, 31, was sentenced in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court after being found guilty of two separate incidents of rape.

He received two sentences of 10 and 20 years imprisonment respectively and was sentenced to a further three years for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm involving a third female victim that was stabbed with a knife.

“The accused was known to his victims and raped the two women on two separate occasions in December 2011 and December 2012 in Kimberley. Matthews at the same time stood trial for an attempted rape in February 2012 but was only found guilty on assault GBH in this regard,” police spokesperson, Captain Sergio Kock, said.

“The female victims are between the ages of 28 and 32 years old. The sentences will all run concurrently, therefore Matthews will serve an effective 20 years imprisonment.

“The acting Frances Baard cluster commander, Brigadier Tip Brink, lauds Detective Sergeant David Tau for a job well done. He also commented that the police are focused on our mandate and see crimes against women and children as one of our priorities, especially during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign,” Kock added.
