KIMBERLEY The Kimberley SAPS Social Crime Prevention, Visible Policing and Sector Policing units, in collaboration with the Northern Cape Department of Education, kicked off the back-to-school campaign by visiting Floors North Primary School yesterday.

The campaign is aimed at strengthening the partnership between the SAPS, the pupils and the Department of Education, in order to enhance and promote safer school environments.

Police spokesperson Captain Sergio Kock said the members of the SAPS relayed basic safety tips to children and also advised them to be aware of kidnappers.

He said that the police urged parents and pupil transport to be on time when picking up and dropping off children at schools.

“Children roaming around alone outside schools have always been a great concern to schools and the SAPS,” Kock said.

Pupils were also warned against physical, emotional and cyberbullying, which, according to

Kock, is one of the most prevalent issues currently being raised at primary and high schools.

“The pupils were informed about the criminal activities taking place at some schools, such as drug usage, drug sales, sexual offences, carrying of dangerous weapons and theft.

“The talk also highlighted basic discipline and respect for yourself as a pupil and for all teachers.”

The team promised their support while committing to preventing, combating and investigating crime in school.

Various other schools will also be visited in the coming weeks.

“Together we can turn the tide against crime,” Kock said.

KIMBERLEY Newly-appointed police constables in the Kimberley SAPS Visible Policing unit arrested a 40-year-old male for alleged theft on Wednesday afternoon.

Kock that at around 4pm the SAPS members were busy with routine patrols in Phakamile

Mabija Road in the CBD when they noticed a security guard chasing the suspect.

“A chase ensued by the newly-appointed police constables, who are currently being mentored by Sergeant Walter Baard,” Kock said “The suspect was arrested minutes later.”

Stolen clothes were retrieved and the police also confiscated pliers from the suspect which had allegedly been used to cut off alarm tags from the clothing items. The value of the stolen clothes is approximately R3 000.

“The acting Station Commander for Kimberley police station, Colonel Belinda Rikhotso, commended the members for their fast response and assistance given to the security guard, which led to the positive arrest. The suspect should be appearing in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court soon. The investigation continues.” MODDERRIVIER The Kimberley police have requested the assistance of the public after a rape occurred in Modderrivier on New Year’s Day.

According to Kock, the victim was walking from Motsweding to Rietvale in Modderrivier when she was accosted at gunpoint by a man wearing a balaclava.

“The man threatened her with the firearm and dragged her into a nearby veld, where he raped her, before fleeing the scene.

“The identity of the suspect is still unknown but he is believed to be between the ages of 20 and 30 years old, of a slender build and tall.”

The police advised the community to be observant and to keep safe.

“Anyone who may have information regarding this incident is requested to contact Sergeant Moses Morris from the Kimberley SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit on 082 302 0473. The investigation continues.” JAN KEMPDORP A Jan Kempdorp man, Billy Cheche, is wanted by the police in connection with the murder of a woman, Katrien Mammatjie Malete, 25.

This follows the discovery of Malete’s body on November 25, 2019. According to Kock, Malete’s body was found in her bed with bruises to her head. Cheche was allegedly seen with the deceased in Jan Kempdorp the night before her body was discovered.

“The Jan Kempdorp SAPS is looking Cheche as he could possibly assist with information regarding the murder,” said Kock.
