IN AN ELECTRIFYING season opener at Kimberley’s Diamond Oval last weekend, the Northern Cape Heat
Cricket Team showcased their strength, clinching an exhilarating 29-run triumph against the Limpopo Impalas in their opening CSA One Day Cup match.
The day kicked off with the Heat losing the toss but still managing to post a competitive total of 230/9, thanks to an outstanding performance by Grant Thompson, who notched up an impressive and solid 57 runs off 79 balls earning him the title of the Heat’s best batsman of the day.
As the Heat took to the field to defend their total, the bowlers turned up the heat on the Impalas.
In the end, the Limpopo team was bowled out for 201, despite a quickfire 82 at almost a run-a-ball by No.3 batsman Louren Steenkamp, handing the Northern Cape Heat a triumphant start to the season.
NC Heat coach Mark Charlton, brimming with pride, commented on his team’s remarkable composure in tense situations, saying, “The team stayed really calm when things got tough, and by doing so, they won the game by 29 runs, which is a really good start to the season, and I am very happy with what the team achieved.”
Grant Thompson emerged as the star of the day, not only impressing with the bat but also picking up five wickets for 32 runs during his fantastic first outing of the season.
In the wake of their solid opening win, and looking ahead to the next challenge, Coach Charlton expressed his anticipation for the clash against the Eastern Storm today.
He acknowledged the formidable nature of the opposition, describing them as “a very talented unit with really destructive batters”. Charlton also highlighted that the Eastern Storm posed a significant threat last season in all competitions.
“I think it is going to be a real challenge for us in terms of our second game at home at the Diamond Oval. We are really looking forward to that challenge,” Charlton told the DFA.
Charlton was keenly aware of the Eastern Storm's motivation, mentioning their recent loss to the Eastern Cape Iinyathi by five wickets in a low-scoring affair at Buffalo Park, in East London.
“They will be really motivated in terms of knocking us over in their second game. We are obviously trying to carry on with the momentum from the Impalas game to win the second game in a row, which will give us a fantastic start to our season,” he added.
In conclusion, Coach Charlton lauded his team’s diligent work in the nets and their mental adaptability to the ever-changing dynamics of the game. “f we can do that,” he said, “then it will be a good outcome for us.”
