AN EARLY childhood development (ECD) centre in Greenpoint, The Pikkewyntjie Crèche, received a facelift compliments of Droogfontein Solar Power, with renovations done to the ablution facilities, classrooms and the roof.

The ECD centre was established in 1994 and has been hailed as an integral part of the community.

The economic development director for Droogfontein Solar Power, Hlengiwe Radebe, said the renovation of the ECD centre will ensure that children are provided with a safe and secure environment to start their learning careers.

“This infrastructure and ECD project signals the strengthening of foundations for future generations in Greenpoint, ensuring that children have access to a safe, nurturing and stimulating educational environment,” said Radebe.

“It underscores the shared vision of Droogfontein Solar Power and the Department of Education to enhance ECD across Kimberley and its surrounding areas. This renovation enhances safety, space and the overall learning environment for its young attendees and dedicated staff.”

Radebe said extensive work was conducted on the centre.

“The renovation included significant structural repairs and upgrades to the ceiling and roof. Separate toilet facilities were constructed for the girls and were modified to be suitable for young children. A non-functional library was converted into a classroom, the outdoor playground equipment was repaired and replaced to meet safety standards and the toddler room and the kitchen were also upgraded for enhanced safety and functionality.

“We have also committed to providing the ECD centre with additional educational materials in the upcoming quarter.”

Radebe added that the project had also given some relief to locals who had been struggling to find employment.

“The project also underscored a commitment to community engagement and empowerment, employing local contractors and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMMES).

“Our dual objective during the project was to enhance the quality of education and to ensure the ECD centre is compliant with the regulatory standards. Our long-term vision is to support the ECD centres to become sustainable institutions that offer quality education and care,” Radebe concluded.
