What are the trails like? The game trail is mostly a good dirt track through the Magaliesberg with an obstacle here and there which you can choose to drive or not. The 4x4 track is a set of challenging obstacles which require a vehicle with low range, rear diff-lock and preferably undercarriage protection. The 4x4 training track is a collection of easy obstacles made from concrete. You can cut your teeth on some ascents, descents, axle twisters and water crossings in a safe, artificial environment. See this trail at www.tracks4africa.co.za. Do I need a 4x4? An SUV or bakkie with good ground clearance will do on the game trail, but you need low-range, a rear diff-lock, good approach and departure angles and nerves of steel for the 4x4 track. Where can we stay? De Wildt has a long list of accommodation options, from campsites to one-, two- and three-bedroom self-catering units. You can even rent your own ‘tent town’ with a private lapa, boma, braai and pool. Costs: R120 per person per night in the campsite and R120 for the stand. Prices for the self-catering units range from R250 to R1 700 and the tent town costs R8 350 per night. Also talk to De Wildt about its combo packages on tents, self-catering units and lapas.
