What are the trails like? The Basic Academy comprises 12 obstacles between Grade 2 and 3. They can be challenging, but are made to help beginners get some practice. The obstacles at the Advanced Eco Academy are a different story. The Eco Trails are rocky, but not technically difficult. Do I need a 4x4? Only 4x4s with low-range gearboxes are allowed in the Academy areas and on the Eco trails, but pipe cars aren’t. For the Advanced Eco Academy your vehicle also needs very good ground clearance, off-road tyres, good approach and departure angles (in other words preferably bull bars) and recovery gear. You also need to travel with a second vehicle as backup. Where can we stay? There’s a spacious, well-kept campsite with warm water but no electricity. What else can we do? You can tackle some mountain biking trails or explore the farm – it’s rich in bird and plant life. Costs: Day visitors: R250 per vehicle with two people, R50 per adult and R25 per schoolchild thereafter. Mountain bikers pay R50. Camping: R270 per 4x4 and R100 for a 4x2 (remember, 4x2s aren’t allowed on the trails); R100 per adult and R50 per schoolchild per night.
